Choosing a PG for your daughter, or for yourself, is one of the first big decisions of a new course or job. A good PG makes the year easier. A poor one can mean poor food, unsafe walks home and arguments over deposits. These are the checks we'd want any family to make.
Safety
- Visit in person, ideally twice. Once in the day and once in the evening, so you see the street lighting and who is around.
- Look at the gate. Is it locked at night? Who controls it, and what happens if a resident is late?
- Check the CCTV. Are there cameras at the gate, entrance and corridors? Ask whether they are recording.
- Meet the warden. Get a phone number you can call at night, and save it before you leave.
- Walk the route to college or office. Is it lit, busy and short? A cheaper PG far away can cost more in autos and worry.
Rooms and bathrooms
- Count bathrooms per room. Attached or shared, and how many people use each.
- Turn on the hot water. Ask how it is heated and whether it runs out in the morning rush.
- Check the room itself. Ventilation, fans, a cupboard with a lock for each resident, and enough space to study.
Food and water
- Taste the food. Visit at a meal time. Ask for the weekly menu and whether it changes.
- Ask where drinking water comes from. RO purified water is the standard you should expect.
Money and rules
- Get the terms clearly. Monthly rent, advance, notice period and refund rules. Always ask for a receipt.
- Talk to a current resident. Two minutes with someone who lives there tells you more than any brochure.
How KPR Nest measures up
We built our PGs to pass this checklist: women-only buildings, CCTV at the gate and corridors, a warden on call, solar hot water, RO drinking water and food from our own kitchen. See the full list of facilities, compare rent at every branch, then come and check us against this list yourself.
